Wine Trial Stopped
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) AXOLI PICENO (Italy), June 14. Italy’s great wine trial was stopped today because the evidence—7o,ooo gallons of wine —was stolen. The trial involved 250 people who were charged with producing or selling adulterated wine made with everything from banana skins to ox blood. The wine trial evidence had been stored in four locked cellars pending analysis by experts. During a recess in the trial last month, police made a routine check and found all
the wine had been syphoned from huge storage vats and replaced with dyed water. Later Fabio Lanciotti, a wine cellar owner, was arrested and confessed that he planned the theft of the wine. He said he sold it for $214,000. More than 40 other persons were arrested with him. Court authorities, in stopping the trial, ordered an investigation of the entire Italian wine industry and said this would be the basis for a new trial to open in seven or eight months. More than 1200 witnesses had been heard in the trial, which had lasted a year.
