Sardinians Vote

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CALGIARI (Sardinia), June 15. Nearly 900,000 Sardinians will vote today and Monday to fill the island’s 74-seat regional Parliament amid widespread discontent. The Christian Democrats, Italy’s majority party, are expected to win the most seats, but some political observers doubt if they can maintain their 43 per cent share of the votes gained in the last election in 1965. The Communists*—the main opposition party—won 20 per cent of the votes in 1965 and appear to be gaining io strength. The discontent in Sardinia arises from the slow pace of economic development during the 20 years that the island has been an autonomous region of Italy. The first election returns are expected late on Tuesday.
