COMMUNITY WORK
‘Encouraging Young People
To help dispel the popular, but incorrect, notion that so many of the teen-agers of today are ne’er-do-well layabouts, the new Lord Mayor of London has just launched Venture 1969. The Lord Mayor, Sir Charles Trinder, wants to encourage and help young people who are engaged in voluntary service and social work, and out of his own pocket intends to offer cash awards to youngsters under [ the age of 21 who, in his i opinion and that of a panel of judges, have done most to help the community. In a speech quoted in a 8.8. C. broadcast by Julian Hale, Sir Charles Trinder said he had no fixed idea of the sort of thing the winners might do, it could be anything from mountain rescue to saving methylated spirits drinkers. But he believes that up and down Britain numbers of young people are applying themselves to excellent work that is either not known or is insufficiently publicised. Venture 1969 will probably cost the Lord Mayor about £2500. There will be five main awards, the biggest of £5OO. The project has to be undertaken by teams of at least two young people, and, most importantly, the award money has to be spent on carrying on the good work.
