Exchange Scheme Teacher In N.Z.
“I don’t know how it happened but I’m the head teacher, and the chap is the assistant,” said Miss Jean Cooke, a Rural Youth exchangee, when describing her job to the New Zealand Country Girls’ Clubs conference in Christchurch.
Miss Cooke teaches at a school with 34 pupils in the Gippsland area of north-west Victoria. Her parents have a 3500-acre wheat and sheep property at Walpeup, 300 miles north-west of Melbourne.
She is now visiting the Christchurch district where her host is Mrs J. D. Galpin, Lymington Farm, R.D. 3, Christchurch. Miss Cooke is on a threemonth rural youth exchange tour sponsored by the A.N.Z. bank. During her visit she is the guest of the New Zealand Federation of Country Girls' Clubs and is staying on varied types of farms in the North and South Islands.
An active member of the Senior Young Farmers of Victoria, Miss Cooke holds positions at both club and district levels. She has a wide range of interests, which include Australian literature and poetry, classical music, dancing, Continental films, handcraft, dried flowers and cookery.
