Fifth Professor To Leave Waikato
(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON, June 11. The professor of mathematics and deputy vice-chancellor of the University of Waikato (Professor D. B. Sawyer) submitted his resignation to a meeting of the university’s council today.
The resignation was accepted with regret It will take effect from the end of this year. Professor Sawyer Is the fifth of the university’s nine foundation professors to resign in the last two years. He will return to the chair of pure mathematics at the University of Otago, which he held before taking the chair at Waikato.
Professor Sawyer emphasised today that his resignation was not to be taken as
a loss of confidence in the University of Waikato. “On the contrary, it seems to' me that with the coming of science and with the new degree regulations, the university is about to blossom in an unprecedented way,” he said.
Professor Sawyer said he had not intended to stay in Hamilton permanently and he had been attracted by the problems involved in setting up a new university. He had no intention of leaving New Zealand.
