Alumina Plant To Be Biggest

BRISBANE, June 11.
Work will begin within the next few weeks on a ss3m expansion programme at the Gladstone plant of Queensland Alumina, Ltd, the company’s managing director (Mr J. W. Holeman) announced yesterday.
The move will lift the plant’s rated capacity from 900,000 tons to 1,275,000 tons, making it the biggest in the world. The work will include the installation of two alumina kilns, the building of a second wharf unloader to speed the discharge of bauxite, and the duplication of a 6000 ft conveyor belt. It will take 18 months.
Ltd, Kaiser Aluminium, of the United States, and Pechiney, of France—will take part in the expansion. Good Year For Broadlands (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 11. Outstandings of Broadlands Dominion Group, Ltd, Auckland financier, jumped about $4.4m to sB.9m in the year to March 31 after the merger with Dominion Finance. Accounts receivable increased $3,303,812 to $6,636,757 and lease receivables by $1,077,215 to $2,248,768. Borrowings were almost doubled to $8,158,202.
The plant is being expanded to meet potential demand from the 100,000-ton-a--year Anglesey aluminium smelter in Britain, which is due to begin production in 1970, and the New Zealand smelter at Bluff, due to begin operating late in 1971.
