ENROLMENT SYSTEM

Change Being Considered (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 9. A single enrolment for both national and local elections could be on the way, the Secretary for Internal Affairs (Mr P. J. O’Dea) said today when addressing the County Clerks and Engineers Institutes. He said discussions had taken place between Internal Affairs officers, the chief electoral officer, and representatives of the institutes.

As a first step to joint enrolment the electoral office was to send change of address forms to local returning officers after it had finished with them. The next step, now being studied was the use of common enrolment forms and a common pool of electoral information for roll purposes. This was a “distinct possibility” with electronic data processing, said Mr O’Dea. Investigations to date indicated that it should be practicable.
