PETER COOPER PLAYS TO BIG AUDIENCE

Yesterday afternoon Mr Peter Cooper played modern pianoforte compositions to a large audience in the University Hall. He has a strong and supple technique which enables him to produce great power and to keep a vivid and pleasant bloom on the tone. His masterly control of the keyboard ensures brilliant clarity, and an expressive response in- nuance and phrasing. He sees right to the heart of the music in his highly satisfying and rewarding interpretations. The programme began with a Sonata written by Igor Stravinsky in 1924—a work in orthodox classical style and charming to hear. The first part had vigorous and flowing movement leading to an adagietto which had the form of decorated melody against

an interesting accompaniment. The last movement rattled' along in brilliant moto perpetuo style. The whole work was most refreshing. A sonata, dating from 1926 by Bela Bartok followed in powerful and ringing challenge in its first movement. There was deep melancholy in the second movement, together with an air of confident resignation. Much brighter spirits blossomed in the last movement. It was terrific.

Three pieces by Erik Satie entitled “Slow and Tearful,” "Slow and Sad,” and “Slow and Serious” had appealing charm and old-world atmosphere; and three pieces by Francois Poulence had piquancy and elan. —c. F.B.
