Intersection Explained

Signa have been put up at the intersection of Oxford Terrace and Lichfield Street and large arrows have been painted on the road indicating that a left turn from Oxford Terrace into Lichfield Street is the only manoeuvre

permitted, the superintendent of the Christchurch City Council traffic department (Mr J. F. Thomas) said thia week.

Mr Thomas was replying to a correspondent, “D.K.H.,” who wrote: “Yesterday I telephoned the Christchurch City Council and informed the traffic department of a serious hazard at the intersection of Oxford Terrace and Lich-

field Street. People travelling along Oxford Terrace towards Riccarton Avenue at the in- i tersection with Lichfield Street meet a temporary island signposted ‘Keep < Left.’ There the uninitiated i turn left all right, clrcum- I navigate the island, and continue along Oxford Terrace i In the wrong direction. The i gentleman I spoke to at the traffic department assured I me that immediate action i would be taken. This after- i noon a visit revealed that ; nothing had been altered. ’ Must we wait for a serious head-on collision to take place ' before this Is remedied?” From the inauguration of

the one-way system it had become apparent that aome motorists travelling out of the city on Oxford Terrace from the Bridge of Remembrance corner were, when they reached the Lichfield Street Intersection, trying to continue on round Oxford Terrace towards the hospital corner, Mr Thomas said. Oxford Terrace from Lichfleld Street to Riccarton Avenue was a one-way street restricted to vehicles travelling from Riccarton Avenue towards the city, he said. The traffic department advised motorists travelling out of the city to Riccarton Avenue or Lincoln Road to turn' into Durham Street at the

Bridge of Remembrance corner and then to turn right off Durham Street into Tuam Street, or into St Asaph Street, where the one-way traffic flow towards Hagley Park would assist them, Mr Thomas said.

When approaching an intersection all motorists should look for road markings or signs, and comply with them.

The diagram shows the Oxford Terrace-Lichfleld Street intersection, with the arrows indicating that traffic travelling from the city (at the top of the diagram) must turn left into the oneway traffic flow along Lichfield Street.
