“STENCH” IN ARANUI

Residents Ask For Priority

The Aranui Clean Air Group and Progress League has sent a telegram to Mr J. Mathison, member of Parliament for Avon, supporting a recent statement from the Health Department that the Christchurch Drainage Board should give priority to eliminating health nuisances before considering more loans for storm-water drainage.

The publicity officer for the group (Mr P. V. Neary) said last evening that Mr R. M. Macfarlane, member of Parliament for Christchurch Central, had questioned the department's action in making this statement. “The Clean Air Group and Progress League is concerned that Mr Macfarlane’s questioning of the Health Department's action will delay progress in eliminating Aranui stench. We believe Christchurch owes it to Aranui to give this problem priority, as we have been waiting for seven years for action,” said the telegram. Aranui residents were still getting a terrible odour from the sewage-treatment works, and it had been especially bad during the last fortnight, Mr Neary Mid. The problem would worsen in the summer.
