BANGKOK MEETING

Assurances On S.E.A.T.O. (N.Z.P.A. Staff Correspondent) BANGKOK, May 20. The continued survival of S.E.A.T.O.—and even its possible strengthening—was assured from the opening moments of the ministerial council which began in Bangkok today. The tone of the closed session of the meeting this afternoon was described by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) as: “A more positive atmosphere with a feeling of greater confidence in the organisation itself.” The United States Secretary of State (Mr William P. Rogers) reaffirmed American determination to help maintain stability in the'region and stressed continued adherence to the Ruck-Thamat exchange of letters which commits America to the defence of Thailand, with or without a S.E.A.T.O. council decision.
