Dead Man Wore Girl’s Sweater
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON, May 20. Detectives investigating the death of Varemoe Ramea, who was found hanging at Tokoroa on Saturday morning, and the disappearance of his 17 - year - old girlfriend, Elizabeth Jane Kershaw, have established that Ramea arrived at Tokoroa wearing some of the missing girl’s clothing. Detective Senior-Sergeant R. Chadwick, of Hamilton, who is heading the investigation, said today that when Ramea . arrived at Tokoroa he was , wearing navy blue stretch trousers and a white roll-neck jersey belonging to the girl. Both were articles of men’s clothing- which had been bought in Thames two months ago. The police had dockets for these purchases, said Mr Chadwick. The roll-neck jer- , sey had been found on Ramea’s body on Saturday morning.
Today a team of detectives called at all petrol stations on the route Ramea was believed to have taken between Thames and Tokoroa. A petrol station five miles north of Matamata reported that a person fitting Ramea’s description, and driving a blue 1955 Hillman Minx, bad bought petrol there at 3 p.m, on Wednesday. A will had also been found on Ramea’s body, said Mr Chadwick. The dead man’s name on it
had been scratched out with a ball-point pen. The will had been written on Friday, but was not considered to be of any great significance, said Mr Chadwick. Tomorrow, several reports that the car was seen in an isolated area near Tokoroa will be checked'by a team of detectives led by Detective Senior-Sergeant J. Collins, of Rotorua. Today, the girl’s father, Mr T. B. Kershaw, aided by friends, searched areas the girl was known to frequent near. Thames.
