Tunku’s New Cabinet
(N.Z. Press Assn. —Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, May 20.
The Malaysian Prime Minister (Tunku Abdul Rahman) today announced a new Cabinet, all the major portfolios going to Malays and Indians.
The Tunku appointed four members from the Chinese wing of his tripartite Alliance as Ministers with special functions under the emergency, a move seen as an effort to placate Chinese feelings after seven days of bloody racial rioting.
The Malaysian Chinese Association had earlier decided not to seek Cabinet appointments because, it said, it had been unsuccessful in winning Chinese votes during the recent elections, resulting in a loss of 14 out of 27 Parliamentary seats.
The Prime Minister appears to have left open the possibility of appointing three M.C.A. leaders as Cabinet Ministers once Malaysia’s present troubles have ended.
“Other permanent Ministerial appointments will be announced as soon as the general situation is improved,” he said.
