BOXING STOPPED
Blair Wins On T.K.O. (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. Boxing fans were disappointed last night when a very willing and entertaining middle-weight professional contest between Fred Taupola, the New Zealand champion, and Dick Blair, the Australian champion, was stopped near the end of the third round and the bout awarded to Blair on a t.k.o. The bout was stopped by the referee after he called in a docter to examine a cut over Taupoia’s left eye. Blair opened the cut over Taupoia’s eye early in the round but after a quick examination the referee, Mr Bob Lyall, ordered the boxers to continue.
Taupola weighed in at list 2JIb and Blair at list 31b. In the professional middleweight preliminary, Daye Asiata, list 411 b, knocked out Ralph Opetaia, list 4jlb, in the third round.
Asiata may retire. He has been plagued with bad headaches after training and fighting over the last six months, and has been pressed by his family to retire. He will seek medical advice on the matter today.
