Jogging Reviewed
Christchurch’s youngest city councillor and a regular jogger, Cr P. N. G.
Blaxall told the council last evening that he was concerned about the Botanic Gardens being barred to joggers who used a path through the gardens to Hagley Park. “I am sure the benefits we get from the sport far
outweigh any traffic hazards when asking whether the parks and recreation committee would consider easing the by-laws. “It appears worth a little
investigation,” the chairman of the committee (Cr P. J. Skellerup) replied.
The Director of Reserves (Mr H. G. Gilpin) had acted in good faith and in support of one of the gardeners, he said. Apparently the joggers were running a little fast or thought likely to be a menace to more passive visitors.
When the council took over the gardens it was agreed that they should be used for passive recreation, he said, and jogging was not necessarily a passive sport.
