Competitions End With Concerts
In days of artificial entertainment people were still prepared to make the effort to take part in the competitions, said the patron of the Christchurch Competitions Society (Mr H. Cordery) oh Saturday evening.
Mr Cordery was speaking at a demonstration concert at Shirley Boys’ High School to mark the end of the competitions. Two concerts were held on Saturday, one in the afternoon where mainly younger competitors performed and one in the evening where the older competitors presented items representing all the activities of the week.
After Mr Cordery had spoken at this concert he presented prizes and thanked all the sponsors, without whom, he said, the competitions could not have been held. Notable prize winners were Denis Whyte, who won the Gilbert and Sullivan Society’s aria scholarship of $lOO, and Sonya Black, who won the Civic Music Council’s scholarship. The competitors began on Saturday, May 10, and continued until Saturday, May 17.
