Big Crane To Move
(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT, May 18. Wilkins and Davies, Ltd, plans to ship a big crane out of Westport for a development project in Samoa by the use of landing craft or barge. The 215-ton Lima crane, capable of lifting 75 tons, was brought from England by the firm especially for the Westport Harbour development scheme which cost $150,000. Believed to be the biggest in Australia and New Zealand, it was assembled on the western harbour wall and crossed the Buller River later under its own power to complete work on the eastern wall on the town side. During its journey to the seaside it caused some damage to Westport streets. The crane has been lying idle for nearly two years, but was recently overhauled. It is believed that the firm intends to drive the crane on to a craft which can be brought close inshore on the north beach. The 80ft jib will be loaded separately. A
