Russley Almost Assured Of Another Golf Title
Russley A assured itself of winning the Woodward Cup inter«club golf trophy for the fifth successive year after the fifth and sixth rounds were played yesterday at Windsor.
Russley won both its matches and will play the second-placed team, Waitikiri in the final round at Harewood. Waitikiri, on* point behind must win seven of the eight matches against Russley to take the cup but this is very unlikely. The form of the Russley A players this season has been consistent and they have won or halved 314 of their 48 matches in the six rounds. Points after six rounds (with matches won in parenthesis) are: Rusaley A 5J (3H). Waitikiri 4J (27), Russley B 3} (29i), Kalanoi 3 (23), Avondale 3 (23), Christchurch 3 (261), Rangiora 1 (16), Templeton i (16|). Protest Not Upheld
There was drama in the Russley B-Christchurch match in the afternoon when Christchurch, set for a win at one stage, finally halved the match, and then had to face a protest to retain even its half point. G. Urlwin (Russley B), who halved his match with B. J. O'Donovan, claimed the seventeenth hole because O'Donovan had lifted his ball twice on the green without the consent of his opponent. His protest was not upheld by the committee, however.
Earlier, J. R. Broaohurst (Russley B>, who had lost to R. Farrant (Waltlktrl) in the morning after being four up with five to play, reversed the procedure with D. R. Hope (Christchurch). Dormle two, he won the last two holes to save the match for Russley. Broadhurst was bunkered at the par-3 seventeenth but chipped to within a foot of the hole, while Hope, in a safe lie. chippod short and missed the putt. Broadhuret seized his opportunity at the last hole and was on the green in two—and down in two putts. Hop* put his second behind th* green and then three-puttod. fipectaculer Recovery Broadhurst eould hardly have been beaten mor* gallantly by Farrant, who stormed back from
four down with five to play to score birdie, birdie, par, birdie, par. on the last five holes and get a half. In the same match. R. K. Atkinson had one ot his rare defeats in inter-club competition when he was beaten by J. Devin*. But Atkinson regained his form in-the afertnoon, winning 4 and 3 against J. A. Orr, Th* most convincing display of the day was by R. E. Clements, who won his morning round against the Rose Bowl player. D. R. Hope. 6 and 4. and then beat another Rose Bowl Pisyer, Ferrant, 7 and 0. Where others made mistakes, Clements played assuredly, especially around th* greens. He three-putted only once—on the first green ot the day. Results:—
