GRANT FROM LOTTERY

Preservation Of Church (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 15. A Golden Kiwi grant of $lO,OOO has been made to preserve a Te Awamutu church which dates from the Maori wars. The chairman of the Historic Places Trust (Mr O. Wilson) said that for several years the trust and the vestry of the Church of St John had been seeking ways of preserving the building, which had been replaced by a larger church. The church was built by a missionary, John Morgan, in 1854, and played an important part in the Maori wars. Some of those killed in the wars are buried in its graveyard.
