TROTTING Winners At Oamaru May Repeat At Washdyke

Somerset Gold and Spangled Hanover, which graduated from maiden company at Oamaru last Saturday, are expected to form the winning combination for the oncourse concession double at the Timaru Trotting Club’s winter meeting at Washdyke tomorrow. Somerset Gold will not have things his own way in the First Caroline Handicap, but the opposition does not look to be quite so strong for Spangled Hanover in the Second Caroline Handicap.

Somerset Gold looks likely to develop good staying form, and should master 14 furlongs at Washdyke better than many of his rivals. Atheist, which showed speed over two miles at Oamaru after starting slowly, could go well. He is obviously well above average in ability, and will only have to begin smoothly from wide out to go close to winning. Sirrah Jay has not raced since he finished third to Dryden Frances at Methven last month. A repeat of that run would give him a great chance of success. Ivanhoe, Khandallab, Sheer Delight, Soldato, and Conroy’s Queen are others expected to race prominently. Spangled Hanover, a sister to a former good winner in Julie Hanover, gained a runaway win at Oamaru in the useful time of 3min 37 2-ssec for 13 furlongs, should be a class above her rivals in the second leg. She looks to be well above average in ability, and now that she has struck form, she should carry on. Light Globe, which has drawn awkwardly, has been racing rather unluckily lately If she begins cleanly, she could make Spangled Hanover work hard to win. Orbette has raced quite well lately, although she showed a disappointing lack of dash when she finished eighth at Forbury Park a fortnight ago. She might do better over the longer distance at Washdyke. Black Judy is seldom guilty of a bad race, and if she receives a reasonable run, could take part in the finish, as also could Red King, Indian Sign and Pine Globe. The T.A.B. concession double will be run on the President’s Handicap and the May Handicap, Irish Whispers and Loyal Adios forming a likely combination. Fair weather is forecast, and a firm track is expected. Fields with form, for the doubles are:— OH-COURSE DOUBLE U a.m.— i
