Plans For $50,000 Golf Tournament
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. Auckland may stage a $50,000 golf tournament early in 1971, the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association announced yesterday.
It said the tournament would be staged to coincide with the centenary of the foundation of Auckland city and the event would be known as the City of Auckland $50,000. One major company has already said it will give substantial support to the event and several other companies have indicated interest. If the event can be promoted it will be the richest tournament staged in Australia or New Zealand and the P.G.A. hopes to attract several top Americans to the tournament.
Next week it will seek a meeting with the United States lawyer, Mr M. McCormack, who manages the affairs of the professionals, A. Pal-
mer, J. Nicklaus, G. Player, and the New Zealander, R. J. Charles. ■ .
