MAJOR UPSET IN BASKETBALL
St Philomena’s College caused an upset in the South Island secondary schoolgirl’s indoor basketball tournament at Cowles Stadium yesterday when it beat the previously unbeaten Mairehau High School team, 35-27.
The brilliant shooting of R. Glenn, who sank baskets from all angles to score 16 points, proved the vital factor in St Philomena’s fine win. Both teams played good basketball.
After trailing, 5-16, Mairehau fought back to 27-27 before St Philomena’s edged ahead in the last few minutes. S. GOsney' and L. Patterson played well for Mairehau. Earlier in the day, Mairehau beat Rangiora in another good game. Waimea College continued its unbeaten run with wins
against Riccarton High School and Taieri High School. If Waimea beats Mairehau in the final round tonight it will win the tournament outright, but if Mairehau wins, the competition might be decided on a count-back. St Philomena’s will hive to beat Rangiora to have a chance.
