Barbarians Lose To Natal Side
(N.Z.P^A.-Reuter—Copyright/ DURBAN. The touring British Barbarians were beaten 16*14 by Natal in the second match of their South African Rugby tour.
Natal opened the scoring in the twenty-first minute of the first half when A. Donovan crashed through as the Barbarians tapped back from a line-out The former Rhodesian flanker grabbed the ball from a melee and dived over for the try which M. Swanby converted. A few minutes later the Barbarian fly-half, C. Telfer was carried off after a hard knock, but later returned to the field and played a leading role in the Barbarian attacking moves.
In the twenty - eighth minute, C. Saville reduced the deficit for the Barbarians when he kicked an easy penalty right in front of the posts. Then came a long, swerving run by D. Duckham, the English international, for a try which gave the Barbarians a 6-5 lead at half-time.
the Springbok full-back, R. Gould gave the home side the lead with a magnificent pen-i alty from about 50 yards.
The Barbarians came back into the game after 25 minutes of the second half with a move in which nearly all the visiting side handled the ball. A. Duggan finally outstripped two Natal defenders and passed to the flanker, B. Rogers, who crashed over for a try. Natal snatched back the lead when R. Steyn, the No. 8, took advantage of a bad clearance by the Barbarian full-back, B. O’Driscoll, to score.
With the final whistle only minutes away, Gould increased Natal’s lead by going over the goal-line with O’Driscoll clinging to his legs. Swanby converted to put Natal 16-9 up.
Just before the whistle, the b_. barian winger, R. Webb made a break of about 35 yards. Rogers snapped up the ball and went over for his i second try, which Saville concerted.
