Search For Canoe

The police last night unsuccessfully searched the banks of the lower Waimakariri River and the river mouth for a canoe.

John Hansen, of Aerial Sowing, Ltd, Amberley, notified the police that about 4.40 p.m. while he was flying down the river saw just below the Main North Road bridge a white-bottomed canoe floating upside-down. He circled the area but could see no sign of any person either in the river, on the banks or nearby. The canoe was of a size children would use, he said. Police were sent to the area but could not find the canoe
