‘Offensive Maintained’

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) ORLU, May 14. Fighting continued today between Nigerian and Biafran forces in the former Biafran town of Umuahia and its environs, the Biafran War Command reports. In a communique issued today, the command says that the Biafran forces maintained their offensive, in spite of heavy, enemy mortar fire.

“Six Nigerian vehicles and two troop carriers were ambushed and destroyed by Biafran forces in the Abagana sector yesterday, after a Nigerian attack which was beaten back mercilessly,” says the communique, claiming “further gains in other sectors.” It adds: “Nigerian troops in the area have been harassing and torturing Biafran civilians behind enemy lines, taking many of them hostage.”
