HANDLING MONEY

Differing attitudes to money can cause serious conflict in a marriage partnership, in close personal associations, and in family relationships. Financial friction can wreck health and happiness if allowed to drift on unresolved.

For persons who accept responsibility for the regular handling of money and need some help in facing their problems, a winter course has been organised by the Extension Studies Department of the University of Canterbury. Lectures will be held at the university’s city site from June 5,

—such as In marriage. Trends in the training of young people in the field of money management will also be discussed. The lectures will be held on Thursday evenings from June 5 to July 31.

The course, “Personal and Family Finance,” will be covered by lecturers from the departments of psychology and sociology, education, and accountancy. They will examine attitudes to money and its impact on personal and family relationships. They will alert consumers to problems and pressures which influence buying. Lectures on consumer behaviour will be based on some of the results of research carried out by psychologists in recent years. The influence of others on buying behaviour, of advertising, fashions, pressure groups, and ethical problems are topics that will be discussed when considering the place of the consumer in modern society.

Methods of planned spending and management of resources will also be studied. The course will consider the conflicts which can arise when persons with differing attitudes to money are brought into close association
