FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT

Situation.—A deep depression far to the south of New Zealand is moving rapidly eastwards and its associated cold front is approaching the South Island. A stationary anticyclone centred west of the North Island covers northern New Zealand. Forecast:

Canterbury.—Fresh to strong and gusty west to south-west winds; cloudy in the far western ranges and at times about the coast, with scattered showers; elsewhere mainly fair; rather cool.

Marlborough except the Sounds.—Light or moderate westerly winds, freshening at times in a few exposed places; fine and mild. Marlborough Sounds.—Fresh to strong and gusty north to north-west winds; cloudy skies, with a little light rain likely at times, especially about the hills; moderate temperatures.

Nelson.—Fresh to strong south-west-erlies; a few isolated showers in the western ranges but otherwise partly cloudy and mild.

Buller and Westland.—Fresh to strong westerly winds; persistent rain; rather cool.
