EXISE DUTY ON RUM

Vandals Cause Problem

fN.Z. Press Assn.—Copuripht) BRISBANE. May 8.

Local police and Customs officials in Brisbane have an unusual problem. The reason for it was that vandals had opened the tap on a distillery vat, and more than 1600 gallons of rum had poured into the small Pine River, near Brisbane. The rum, which had matured for two years and was ready to be bottled, was released over the week-end, but company officials revealed its loss only yesterday. The production cost of the rum was about 81003. Excise duty, however, is estimated at about $lB,OOO. A decision on whether the company, Normanby Distillery, will still have to pay the exise duty has yet to be made by the Customs Department.
