Doctor Not Available For Blood Test
(New Zealand Press Association)
AUCKLAND, May 11.
The breath and blood test law for suspected drunken motorists this week-end again ran foul of the problem of the ununavailability of a doctor to take the blood sample.
Again the problem arose in Otahuhu, where the police were unable to find a doctor prepared to come to the police station in the early hours of this morning to take a sample from a motorist who had al-
ready given positive results to two breath tests. But at 2 a.m. on Saturday the Otahuhu police were able to find a doctor prepared to come to the station although, a police officer said, the doctor had been up since 7 a.m. on Friday. When the motorist who was stopped by a police patrol early yesterday because of his manner of driving gave positive results to two breath analyser tests the police rang several doctors to ask them to come to take a blood sample. On each occasion, however, an automatic answering service referred them to the duty doctor for the Otahuhu area.
The duty doctor told police he was not available to take the sample. After taking particulars, the police allowed the motorist to leave.
