Club Retracts On Haul-out Area
Development of the haulout area at Naval Point reclamation, approved by the Lyttelton Harbour Board at the request of yacht owners, would be too great a burden for the Banks Peninsula Cruising Club’s finances, the club advised the board yesterday.
It asked whether the board would be prepared not only to finance development ot the area but also to administer it. “Your committee is very concerned that the elub does not now wish to proceed with the project, and recommends that the letter be received,” the small craft committee commented.
“There has been 'constant pressure on the board from the club to do something, and we are very disappointed at the club’s attitude,” said Mr L. G. Amos, a former chairman of the board. “I hope it will reconsider. The board is spending $20,000 on a haulout area and we should be joined by the yachting fraternity in helping us and helping themselves.” The board agreed to ask the club that because the proposed lease of the haul-out area was not being proceeded with, club members still intended to use the slipway for hauling out larger craft. The small craft committee said that if the slipway was modified to cater for power and motor-boats there would be a considerable reduction in capital expenditure. Port Illustrated.—The 1970 Christchurch telephone directory would have a view of Lyttelton as its cover, the board was advised. “I would not be hurt if the same thing
happened as happened to the cover featuring Mount Cook —they all went in the first fortnight,” Mr G. Burns said. “But of course we can’t recommend that.”
Pilot Promoted.—Captain W. V. Wood was promoted from junior pilot to pilot.
Trade Better.—An increase of 45,957 tons in the cargo handled for the seven months of the board’s financial year was reported. Imports were up from 602,081 tons to 624,086, and exports from 293,485 to 317,437. Engineers’ Conference.—Mr J. B. Bushell, the assistant chief engineer, was appointed to attend a conference of engineers of Australian port authorities in Adelaide in October.
Time Ball Station.—Mr F. F. Teague was given permission to begin restoration of the time ball mechanism at the time ball station; and the board agreed that a committee representing the Christchurch Civic Trust and the New Zealand Historic Places Trust should proceed with plans to form a trust or society to lease and restore the building
