C.J.C. Stakes Increased

The Canterbury Jockey Club yesterday announced substantia! stake increases for major races at its Grand

National and Cup meetings this year.

The 1969 Grand National Steeples will be worth $BOOO, which is $lBOO more than last year. The stakes for the Grand National Hurdles have been increased by $5OO to $4500. The C.J.C. hopes to continue to attract the top three-year-olds with increased stakes for its New Zealand Derby and Oaks Stakes in November. This year the New Zealand Derby will be worth $7OOO,

an increase of $lOOO, and the New Zealand Oaks stake will be $4OOO, an increase of $l5OO.

The club bas reduced the distance of the New Zea-

land Oaks from one mile and a half to one mile and a quarter. This follows the lead of the Wellington Racing Club which held its first Oaks contest at a mile and a quarter in January and secured a generous response from owners. Dr M. G. Louisson, of Christchurch, has again given the club a gold cup, worth $250, to be presented to the owner of the Canterbury Gold Cup,winner in November.
