Defeat Of Top Squash Player
The top-ranked Canterbury player, B. V. Hamilton, was defeated by J. G. Foulds in a 70-minute endurance contest when the second round of the A grade squash rackets competition was played last night. This win by Foulds gave his team. Old Collegians, victory over Christchurch C, and regained for him top place In Christchurch squash, a position he held for most of last season. , . The fast-improving High School Old Boyo side had a win over Christchurch A, although the margin of four matches to nil was a surprise. Points after two round* are: H. 5.0.8. 18, Christchurch B 18, Old Collegians 18. Christchurch C 12. Christ’s College |l, Christchurch A 2. University A 2 'The lV Foulds?Hamilton match wgs disappointing. Seldom did either display any court-craft, being content to hit firmly, and at times overhit, waiting for an error to gain a point. Per a brief period in the second game. Hamilton varied his driving with some wellplayed drops; but thij waa too good to last and he soon fe|l back Into the driving game inspired by Foulds. Earlier, T. L- William • (Old Collegians) had pteyed with precision and a surprising lack of errors to overcome S. Suckling (Christchurch C), In
three games. Suckling led 8-6 In the first two but could not finish them off, and In the third. Williams was well on top of a very tired opponent. Although Christ’s College gained the maximum points against University B. the students made a great fight of it, with three of the matches going to five games. A. Naughton’s effort In taking J. H. N. Pine (Christ’s College) to five, can be accounted nls best performance to date. He mixed hi* shots well and moved to the front of the court very quickly for anything short. Pine was as steady as ever, volleying crisply to a good length, and he seldom allowed his younger opponent to dictate the play. J. Mitchell (H. 5.0.8. who made his first appearnace on the Canterbury ladder after the first round with his win over Naughton, now advances to seventh position. through defeating L. G, Milne (Christchurch A). Mitchell played seme fine touch squash once Milne began to tire but still lacks solidity in his driving.
Another player of promise t 6 have a good win was N. Bush (University A). He ran through B. Taylor (Christchurch B) In three games, seldom making an error and using his height to advantage. During the weekend these two had played a five-'
set challenge match, which went to Rush, but in last night's contest Rush was definitely superior.
