GIRLS GIVE CONCERT

Season In Civic Theatre

A programme including folk songs, Samoan dancing, illuminated figure marching and a pageant provided two hours and a half of amusing and enjoyable family entertainment at the regional concert of the Girls’ Brigade in the Civic Theatre last evening. More than half the audience were children. The theatre was three-quarters filled. Other items included country dancing, Maori action songs, maypole dancing and camp-fire songs. The programme ended with the pageant, “The Girls’ Brigade,” which traced the history of the brigade from its beginning in England in 1901 to its introduction to New Zealand in Dunedin in 1928 and the formation of the first Christchurch company in 1938.

The concert, which will continue each evening until Friday, involves more than 1600 girls from the Canterbury and West Coast region. The producer is Mr B. Clemons.
