Vandals Slash Hood In Parking Building
Vandals slashed the hood of a Jaguar sports car parked on the sixth floor of the City Council’s Manchester Street parking building on Monday evening.
The owner parked the car at 7 p.m. but discovered that the hood had been slashed beyond repair with a knife when he went to take his car away at 10 p.m.
“The hood was slashed along one side towards the rear, and slashed again at the front. It resulted in a 3ft L-shaped tear. The front of the hood was also cut right through the lining.
“The radio aerial on my car was also smashed. Damage has been estimated at $l2O and I will have to have a new hood,” the owner said yesterday. “I informed the police and they were at the car park within five minutes. But what chance do they have of catching the vandals? “The lights were on when I left the car but they were all out when I returned. I
parked the car in the building for safety. I won’t be parking there again. “The City Council apparently adopts a ‘no care, no responsibility’ attitude. They need a superviser on duty as long as the building is open for parking, and lights on all
night,” the owner said. “If the council charges for parking, it should exercise responsibility.” Mr J. F. Thomas, the City Council’s traffic superintendent, said last evening that there was no necessity for a motorist, even though he had a week-day park on the sixth floor; to park there after dark. However, “police” lights should be on that and other floors not fully lighted, and he would ensure that they were in future.
