BLOOD TESTS
Solution Sought (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 5. Negotiations were proceeding between Officials of the Medical Association of New Zealand and the Hospital Board’s Association to find a satisfactory solution to the problem of blood testing of suspected drunken drivers, the Minister of Transport (Mr Gordon) said tonight Commenting on the reluctance of M.A.N.Z. officials in some districts to take blood samples, Mr Gordon said the association had been one of the main advocates for the new law. On hospital board reluctance, Mr Gordon said that once a patient had been admitted to hospital he was under the control of the medical officer of the board concerned, and at that stage legislation was quite specific as to whether blood could or could not be given, having regard to the patient’s health. The responsibility of taking blood for the sole purpose of obtaining evidence would rest with the police surgeon for the district concerned. (Blood-alcohol Law Amendment Sought—Baek Page.)
