"The Press’* Special Service PALMERSTON NORTH. Palamos again looked very good when he galloped at Awapuni yesterday morning, and Is very fit for the Wadestown Handicap at Trentham tomorrow. The hack stayer. Champion Road, was no less impressive when he easily beat his Johnsonville Handicap rival, Jovial Friar, though the latter is a very poor track worker. On the course proper Palamos ran away from Alan s Pride over the concluding stages of six furlongs, and won bv at least 15 lengths. Palamos ran the distance in Imm 19sec, the final three taking Road beat Jovial Friar bv eight lengths over seven furlongs in Imin 33sec, the final three in 41 2-ssec.
Tuition For Apprentices Apprentice jockeys from Ricearton. South Canterbury and West Coast districts will receive their first practical instruction in the techniques of race riding since the local apprentice school was inaugurated more than 12 months ago. during the first week of the school holidays in May. The lessons for the young horsemen will be under the supervision of the Riccarton trainer. C. McDonald, a former top jockey, and the successful Riccarton horseman. G. W. Mein. The practical tuition will be held at Riccarton Racecourse from May 12 to 14 inclusive. Riding Master Appointed "The Pres*’* Special Service HASTINGS. The Hastings jockey, S. Dodds, has been appointed rid* ing master for the Hawke's Bay apprentice jockeys’ school. He succeeds J. T. Anderson, who has completed ins term as instructor. Dodds attended the school in his official capacity the first time this week.
