RACING Domodossola Picked At Trentham Tomorrow
Domodossola easily won the Hawke’s Bay Cup at his last start, and looks equal to the task of mastering a stronger field in the Gloaming Stakes at Trentham tomorrow.
If the Hawke’s Bay Cup field did not have the same strength in depth, it contained the high-class fare, Honour Me, but Domodossola beat her over 11 furlongs by four lengths in 2:16.
The Hawera-trained Tsaoko gelding carried 7-12 at Hastings. Tomorrow he has 8-7 and will be giving weight to all his rivals now that Dalvui has been scratched. Track conditions are likely to have a big bearing on the chances and favouritism for the race. Mudlark Proud Chief will have an army of backers if the ground gets soft or heavy. But his intending backers might give the matter some thought if the track is as good as it was yesterday when the Takanini stayer was soundly beaten in a training mile by the Riccarton-trained Every Post Proud Chief is one of the best winter gallopers m the country, but because he has also had extensive racing without any worth-while results on summer tracks he is down to 8-1. From this place in the ban- 1 dicap a horse that has won; races of the standard of the' Great Northern St Leger, Avondale Cup, and both the Winter Oats and the Watkins Handicap at Trentham can be given high ranking if the footing is easy or worse. Having won the Nelson Cup last time out, Every Post has come strongly into consideration. His connections hope for a flemish track. So do those of | the Wingatui-trained Gay I Gabador, which galloped at) Riccarton yesterday morning; and was taken north last ' evening. Inches To Spare Gay Gabador beat Kalott by Inches in the Great Autumn Handicap, over the Gloaming Stakes distance, at Riccarton last month. Kalott has thrived in the meantime for the Otaki trainer, K. J. Thomson, and she is an obvious prospect with her Great Autumn weight of 8-3. Colorado Boy, Chapel Belle and Escameno should make for formidable representation for Manawatu interests. Colorado Boy and Escameno were two of the dominating figures in the finish of the main race at Woodville last week. Escameno outfinished Colorado Boy last week and will meet S. A. Brown’s charge 51b worse. Last September Escameno beat Fans in the Spring Gold Cup at Hastings, and he is holding his form well. He will have R. B. Marsh to ride him tomorrow. A mile and a half run at a strong pace all the way will set Chapel Belle a heavy task. But she is the only member of the tribe of Pakistan H to have won over 11 furlongs—the race was the Taranaki Cup—and she has since ran second at Ellerslie to Johnny Cash. Form Runner His Lordship, a versatile performer with wins at two of his last three starts, should run out every yard of the distance, and from one of the inside positions at the start he should manage to get a rails run, which shows him to the best advantage. He will gallop better
through soft ground than Gay Gabador, Narcotic and Every Post, the other representa- , tives for South Island stables. ; Dashing Lu earned favouritism for the Wades- < town Handicap, second leg of < the T.A.B. double, with a decisive win under 8-10 over ;
the same distance at Avondale last week. Dashing Lu is trained at Te Aroha. Another formidable representative for the north is Choucuana, winner of the Auckland Easter Handicap, and an impressive trialist at Trentham yesterday.
In the meantime this four-year-old has been twice placed, Kastrup only touching her off over seven furlongs ; at Te Awamutu last week. Of those racing closer to their home centres the best . might be Jindabyne, Fashion Plate and Palamos.
