The proposed Kaiapoi High School may be opened in February, 1972. At the monthly meeting of the Kaiapoi Borough Council, regret was expressed that the council’s efforts towards an opening in 1971, apparently were not acceptable, but it was considered that progress was now being made.

Swimming Pool—After the council had discussed proposals for a new pool in committee, it was decided to continue the dollar-for-dollar subsidy as previously granted. The New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association’s minutes, forwarded by the Kaiapoi club, recommended that no further carnivals be held in the Kaiapoi pool until it is brought up to reasonable competition standard. The club had asked the council to consider plans for the construction of a new pool.

“Good progress is being made now, and my department expects to receive sufficient information from the Ministry of Works within a month or two to complete preparation of the proposal I shall submit to the Government I can assure you that I intend seeking approval of February, 1972, as a target date for opening the school, but this will naturally be subject to a decision by the Government I suggest that you keep closely in touch with the Regional Superintendent of Education, Christchurch, who will be able to keep you informed of future progress.” Naturalisation.—Before considering council business, the Mayor (Mr H. O. Hills) administered the Oath of Allegiance to Str and Mrs C. S. Cstk. The District Officer for the Depart, raent of Internal Affairs <Mr C. J. Kite) was also present. Smith Street Lighting—The electrical engineer tabled a Ministry of Worts plan of proposed Smith Street lighting from Charles Street to the Cam Boad interchange bridge, and reported that it appeared that all lighting in the street would be under borough control: the capital installation cost and all materials provided by the National Beads Board, and maintenance on the same 3 to 4 subsidy basis as other streets.
