EXPULSION ATTEMPT
N.Z. Asked To Give Support
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON. The secretary of the Citizen’s Association for Racial Equality (Mr T. 0. Newnham) yesterday asked the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association to support the expulsion of South Africa from the Davis Cup nations meeting in London in July. The meeting is to consider South Africa’s expulsion from the competition. Mr Newnham said in a statement issued last night that it was a well-established fact that the South African Lawn Tennis Union was a racial body which restricted its membership to white South Africans. “When previous moves have been made to expel South Africa from the International Lawn Tennis Federation and replace it by a multi-racial body, the very considerable voting strength of New Zealand has been given to the South African union,” he said. .“Thus New Zealand has played a leading part in denying the right of non-white South Africans to play tennis under fair conditions and to represent their country in the Davis Cup.”
