Period* of probation were ordered for five boye, their agea ranging from 15 to 17, when they appeared In the Christchurch Children's court in March on criminal charges. Probation for three years was ordered when a youth of 17 was charged with burglary. A similar period of probation was Imposed on a boy of IS who appeared on charges of being idle and disorderly, burglary, attempted burglary, theft, dangerous driving and failing to stop. Two boys aged IS charged with burglary, and another boy of the same age, charged with wilful damage, were placed on probation for two years. In the latter case a fine of 5100 was also imposed. Three children, their ages ranging from one month to six years, who appeared on complaints that they were indigent, were committed to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare, as were a boy aged one year and a girl of seven months, found to be living in an environment detrimental to their physical well-being. Similar decisions were made in the cases of two girls aged 14 deemed to be not under proper control, a boy aged IS charged with theft, and two lS.year-old boys charged with burglary. environment detrimental to their physical well-being, four children, their ages ranging from two and seven, were placed under the supervision of a child welfare officer for one year. Three boys aged 14 and 15, charged with theft, were admonished and discharged, as were two 14-year-old boys, one charged with converting a motor-cycle and the other with interfering with a car. In the latter case restitution amounting to $12.02 was ordered. A boy aged 14, charged with assault and two boys aged 16, one appearing on a complaint that he was not under proper control, and the other charged with leaving dangerous litter in a public place, were also admonished and discharged. Five girls, aged from 14 to 16, who were charged with escaping from lawful custody, were admonished and returned to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare, as was a boy aged 13. charged with theft and unlawfully taking a bicycle. Fines were imposed as follows:—A boy aged 16, assault, $5O; a boy aged 16, drinking liquor in a public place, $l5; two boys aged 16, unlawfully possessing and dangerously using a firearm, $5O each; a boy aged 16, dangerous driving, $6O; a boy aged 16, trespassing, $2O; a boy aged 16, opening the door of a car in a manner likely to cause injurv. $45; a boy aged 16, unlawfully on premises and drinking in a public Slace, $l2; a boy aged 15, urglary, $4O.
