Obituary Miss H. Enright

Miss Honoris (Nonie) Enright, who died in Christchurch' recently, had a fine record of community serservlce, particularly for the elderly blind. For 42 years she served on the Christchurch advisory committee of the New Zealand Foundation for the Blind and retired only last month. Miss Enright was one of the prime movers in the establishment of Fernwodd Hostel, where 78 elderly blind men and women now live. Before the formation of the Christchurch branch of the foundation in 1948, Miss Enright regularly visited elderly blind folk in her concern for their needs.

A member of St Mary’s Church, Manchester Street, Miss Enright was an early member of the Catholic Women's League of the Diocese of Christchurch. Her voluntary welfare ser-

vice extended to many other organisations, including the Red Cross, the women’s auxiliary of the Navy League and the Clothes Shop. When Miss Enright became interested in a cause she gave to it generously in enthusiasm and energy. Her sense of fun lightened many a 'problem and made her a much valued fellowworker. She was often called upon as an auxiliary helper by organisations of which she was not a member.

For many years Miss Enright was an active member of the Canterbury Repertory Society and took parts in several of its productions. A daughter of the late Mr Timothy Enright, a Westport businessman, Miss Enright spent her youth on the West Coast. With her sister, the late Miss Mary Enright, formerly women’s editor of “The Press.” she ran a private school in Westport for many years before moving to Christchurch.
