Agricultural Targets
Sir, —As the price is the dependent variable, more research must be implemented to give a satisfactory forecast. Market research and development, however, should go hand in glove with any decision to increase livestock numbers and exports of agricultural goods. There may be
a demand for such goods but it is important to bear in mind that the consumer must be able to afford these goods. Any marketing system must 1 perform the function of transmitting consumers* wishes to the producer to enable him to secure the best use of the factors of production. The system should give us the maximum possible returns from our products. It should enable the producer to apportion the production between the different markets according to their profitability. This should encourage the production of the more profitable grades and types. What is needed is a more forthright, clear, comparable statistical analysis of the present and future markets before it is too late.—Yours, etc.. SUB ECON April 24, 1969
