National Day
Sir.—Once again I wish to criticise Waitangi Day as the choice for a national public holiday. While I sympathise ' with the concept of a national day, 1 oppose the Labour ; Party conference's remit i which supports Waitangi Day as the national day. The Treaty of Waitangi merely marked New Zealand's subjfection and absorption into the British Empire. Our true independence did not come until the Statute of Westmin- : ster was legally adopted in 1947, when independent ior 'eign policies were conceded Ito all dominions in the British Commonwealth. Thus ' it would be more appropriate i to celebrate the acceptance of ; the Statute of Westminster as our national dav.—Yours, etc . DISILLUSIONED EMPIRE LOYALIST. April 26. 1969.
