Surprising Basketball Win By Hagley A

In an outstanding game Hagley A beat Technical, 38-30, in the second round of the Canterbury' Basketball Association competitions at South Hagley Park on Saturday.

In previous games. Technical had looked the stronger side fielding only one new player, L. Burney at goal-keep, who had come up from the second grade. Hagley A members bad played good individual games but on Saturday tbey played as a team and the final goal margin was a good indication of their competence in combination play. The game was outstanding to watch mainly because of brilliant centre play by S. Langrope (Technical) and C. Cottrell (Hagley), who are trialists for the New Zealand team. New Brighton, which had a comfortable win against Hagley B, wore a new uniform of short tailored mustard-coloured skirts and white monogrammed blouses. Teachers’ College and Sacred Heart won the other: two games. Results were:— New Brighton 38, Hagley B IX Hagley A 38, Technical 30. Teachers’ College 32, St Nicholas 17. Sacred Heart 28, Cashmere 18. racHMicAL uosas Technical opened the scoring with a beautiful ahot by S. Norman at goal-shoot. and Hagley A levelled to set the pattern el the arst half at aoal for goal. The pace was set by Technical! which used Us usual swift com-' binstlons to keep the ball moving to the goal shooters. The defences of both teams used the three-foot obstruction rule but the goal shoots retaliated by holding the ball slightly longer than usual. Several tunes the defences overbalanced to lose their advantage or were penalised for obstruction However, the defences jumped well to lake rebounds with A. Ogilvie (Hagley) at goal-keep, playing her best game of the season. The half-time score was 17-16 to Hagley. L. Dawson, at goal-shoot for Hagley. succeeded with every shot in the first half and C. McMaster, goal attack for Hagley improved her shooting in the second half so that Hagley drew ahead to 23-30. Technical continued to force the pace but the Hagley captain McMasters steadied her team and it kept ahead 31-37. S. Norman iTechnical) secured some difficult goals and manoeuvred i brilliantly in the circle. The Hagley goal shooters had. the measure of their defences for the last five minutes of the game but Technical drew to: 30-37 before the final whistle; went at 38-30 to Hagley.'l

I BASY WIN ' New Brighton was much more experienced than Hagley B but Hagley did not give up lighting. New Brighton played a tactical game of close defence using shoulder-level passes apart from the long overhead throws by its goal-keep. M. Simeonides. Hagley had difficulty in evading the New Brighton defence tactics and was inclined to punctuate its game with pauses while players tried to free themselves. The half time score was 20-6 to New Brighton. In the second half the Hagley captain, J. Wright, received (most of the first passes from centre and worked hard to feed |the ball to the goal-shooters but jthey found difficulty in clearing •the ball to the circle to shoot. L. Haywood (Hagley) made several good interceptions at centre but J. Buchanan, at goal-shoot, and L. Morris, at goal-attack, scored consistently for New Brighton. i FAST GAMES Using swift shoulder-level passes. Teachers’ College scored early in its game against St Nicholas which then held it in check until the score was tied at 4-4. But the St Nicholas defence was outplayed in the Teachers’ College goal third, where C. Vincent, goal attack and C. O’Malley, goal shoot. ;played aggressively and fought for rebounds successfully. Wild passing marred the Teachers' [College game which was otherIwise tn line with its improved form in the Brown Cup tournament. St Nicholas failed to match the pace maintained by Teachers' College in the second half and it crept ahead 22-14. But the Teachers’ College goalshoots missed many goals and were inclined to lose the ball in the goal third with short body passes which were easily intercepted by M. Reeve (St Nicholas), the wing-attack. C. Vincent (Teachers' College) improved her shooting near the end of the game. CASHMERE TRAILS Sacred Heart used the whole court to play good positional basketball against a fast pace set by Cashmere. The superio-

rity of J. Harnett (Sacred Heart) let her have her own way in the Sacred Heart goal third. Cashmere tried hard to narrow to a 10-goat margin set by Sacred Heart after 13 minutes and maintained throughout the game. The halftime score was 17-8 to Sacred Heart.

R. Morgan (Sacred Heart) at centre kept the ball moving, but C. McCartney (Cashmere) her marker, guarded well and was especially active round the circle using bounce passes to avoid the tight defence. A. Cooper (Sacred Heart) at goal defence Jumped well to intercept many Cashmere passes and K. O’Reilly, at goalkeep. closely guarded the Cashmere goal shoot. A. Guerson worked hard and pulled the Cashmere score up to 11-18. D. Trevella (Cashmere) at wingattack. matched her opponent A. Gee, but towards the end Sacred Heart could not be caught, and won 28-19.
