Man Falls Into Waipara River
A man died when he fell down a 60ft bluff into the Waipara River about 11 p.m. on Friday. He was.
lAN DOUGLAS BEAUMONT. aged 28, a commercial fisherman, of Lighthouse Road, Akaroa. He was married with two young children, Mr Beaumont was on a week-end deer-shooting trip with three other persons. He was walking along a track on McDonald Downs Station on his way back to the camp when he apparently looked down into the riverbed to see if any of his companions had returned to the hut, and walked over the bluff. He fell face down into the water. At the time of the accident Mr Beaumont was walking
close to a van being driven! along the track by Max John Keddell, of Hawarden, another member of the party. Mr Keddell did not see the accident but when he realised Mr Beaumont had disappeared he called out and made a search. He then obtained the assistance of his companions and they found the body with the aid of spotlights. An inquest was opened at Waikari on Saturday morn- 1 ing before Mr F. J. Shadbolt,' for identification.
