Investigation Of Wool Prices
The Consumer Institute will be asked by the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women to investigate the retail price of New Zealand knitting wools. This was decided this week, after members of the council had consulted the organisations they represent on a remit from the Hurunui Women’s Division of Federated Farmers to the March meeting. “We are not concerned with the wool versus synthetics question, but with wool prices in New Zealand.” said Mrs R. C. Overton, the WD.F.F. representative. “I know the mark-up is very great. The Consumer Institute is fair and they are the proper people to look into it." Proposals on the replace-
ment or renovation of all unsatisfactory public conveniences in the Christchurch Botanic Gardens and in Hagley Park would come before tjje City Council at its next meeting, the Mayor (Mr Guthrey) said in a letter to the branch.
At the March meeting of the N.C.W., members agreed to the request of Dr M. Smith (Medical Women’s Federation) to write to Mr Guthrey expressing disapproval at the state of the toilets in the Botanic Gardens, and asking that something be done about them promptly. Frequent acts of vandalism were responsible for much of the condition the toilets were in, said Mr Guthrey in his letter. “It is Impossible to leave anything that is renibvable in the buildings—it is invariably removed!” he said.
