Mr G. L. Evans, a partner in the Christchurch consultant engineering firm of Royds. I Sutherland. Evans and McLeay. has been granted a special bursary of SlO.OOO to carry out earthquake reseach. The bursary is provided by the National Roads Board and Mr Evans will take extended leave from his firm while be is studying. The sampling and experiments will be mainly at the University of Canterbury, with co-operative testing at the University of Auckland Mr Evans was involved in civil defence work after the Inangahua earthquake and carried out a detailed study of damage to railway bridges The bursary will enable Mr Evans to carry out experiments on the forces which act on these structures during earthquakes.
