New Work By Britten

Benjamin Britten has completed a major new work which is to be performed for the first time by a school choir in London on May 19. The 20 - minute work, Children's Crusade, is based on a narrative poem by the German poet and dramatist, Bertolt Brecht. It has been written for performance by Wandsworth Comprehensive School Boys’ Choir, and is to mark the 50th anniversary of the Save the Children Fund Mr Britten describes the work as a ballad for children’s voices and orchestra. It is based on Brecht’s story of a band of children lost in war-time Poland in 1939.

It will be sung at its premiere in a specially prepared English translation, though it was composed in German.
