TROTTING Garrison Hanover Had Top Sales Average

The progeny of Garrison Hanover were the most keenly sought at the annual yearling sales held last week at the Show Grounds. Thirteen of the progeny of this stallion, which heads this season’s sires’ list, were sold for $32,450, an average of $2496.

Garrison Hanover owes his place mainly to the great demand for his fillies. Thurber Frost had a slightly better average for his colts, but Garrison Hanover beat him handily in the average for fillies.

aging $l9Bl. He had three sold at $3OOO or more. As well he sired the top colt from Rose Brigade, which bought $5OOO, the second highest on record for a stand-ard-bred yearling. Six fillies by Thurber Frost also sold well and they averaged $1925. A filly from Forever bought $3200, and two others realised $2OOO. Garrison Hanover, Thurber Frost, Bachelor Hanover and Johnny Globe all had averages greater than the sales average of $1566 when the aggregate of fillies and colts was combined.

Leading averages for stallions represented by two or more lots sold were: Sire No. Sold Aggregate Average $ $

Thurber Frost, which died last spring, was represented by six colts sold for an average of $2700, while seven by Garrison Hanover averaged $2678. Not far behind was Bachelor Hanover with eight ; colts sold for an average of $2378.

The support for fillies was a feature of the sales, the demand being particularly strong for those from good winner-producing families. Many of the purchases seemed to be made more with stud potential in view rather than concern for their possibilities on the race track.

Johnny Globe was the only other with an average of more than $2OOO for his colts. Four of his colts sold at an average price of $2125.

Garrison Hanover headed the section for fillies with six lots sold at an average price of $2183. He had the top-priced filly sold for $3500, while two realised $2500. Bachelor Hanover’s second crop of fillies to go through the ring met with a keen inquiry, his eight lots averag-

Once again a high proportion of the top-priced fillies went to Australia, but a reasonable number will remain in New Zealand to help boost the depleted ranks of good mares, which have suffered heavy inroads from Australian studmasters.
