ANGLING AT LAKES
Reply To Complaint
An incorrect impression was created by an article in “The Press” on March 14, which criticised the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society’s fishing licence policy, said the publicity officer of the society (Mr G. Ferris) in a statement. The article referred to resentment expressed by the secretary of the Teachers’ College Staff Anglers’ Club (Mr R. E. Griffith), who said that the extended fishing season for Lakes Benmore and Aviemore was restricted to holders of licences issued by the Waitaki Valley and South Canterbury Acclimatisation Societies.
“Any licence-holder desiring to fish the Aviemore and Benmore Lakes can secure a free permit to cover the experimental season in this area, on application to the Marine Department office, or to the offices of the South Canterbury or Waitaki Valley societies,” said Mr Ferris. “No angler possessing a current North Canterbury licence is denied the right to fish, as was suggested by Mr Griffith. The North Canterbury society is not empowered to issue permits outside its district, and considers the criticism in Mr Griffith’s letter unfair and unwarranted,” Mr Ferris said.
